    • Served France (1916). Promoted to the rank of Sergeant at France (1916).
      On 23 September 1916 Sergeant Hayton was wounded in action - at the Somme, France. He was medically evacuated to England - where he would remain in hospital until September 1917.
      Soon after he was invalided home to New Zealand - where he was discharged from the NZEF on 12 July 1918. He had served overseas - with the NZEF - for 2 years & 213 days.
