  • Son of Abraham William Haynes and Ellen Haynes of 15 Ponsonby Terrace, Ponsonby, Auckland.

    Two sons brothers William Robert Haynes (24014) and Douglas Shaw Haynes (70481) were killed in WW1.

    Appointed Company Cook mid November 1916 he relinquished the position at the end of the month.

    Evacuated sick with influenza at the end of November he was away from his unit until 20 December 1916.

    "Beloved second son of A W and the late Ellen Haynes" "In a distant land he lies, At rest in a soldier's grave; His battle fought, his name enrolled

    On the scroll of the deathless brave. A lonely grave in a far-off land,

    A grave we may never see, But while life and memory last We will remember thee"
