      Embarked S.S. Maunganui, His Majesty’s New Zealand Troopship Number 49 at Wellington. Appointed R.S.M. [Regimental Sergeant Major] with Lt. [Lieutenant] G. H. Black: Adjt [Adjutant], Major Brereton: Officer Commanding [O.C.] Rfts [Reinforcements], Captain Scoon: Officer Commanding Troops. Companies on board: A, B, C, D Mounted Rifles, J, K Companies New Zealand Medical Corps, Engineers. Evening with Ovingdean. [Presumably with folk from that place]
      April 2
      Sailed. Voyage excellent, though heavy swell in parts.
      April 6
      General vaccination on account of smallpox case.
      April 10
      Arrived Albany. General leave whole ship from 2pm to 10pm. Men all returned. Middleton Beach. V. E. M. S. [???]
      April 11
      Sailed. ….. Nothing of interest remainder of voyage. Crossing line Neptune and family arrived on board: sports: vaccination results rather bad. Voyage perfect.

      Had to go to Hospital after weak headaches and general grogginess.
      May 3
      Arrived Suez. Taken to Infections Hospital. Measles. While there saw Sister [Mary] Mills of Pahiatua. Hear news of Nora [Leslie Hughes], Ina [Leslie Bennett], and Sister [Kate] Booth.

      Left in charge party Australians for Tel-el-Kebir Camp. Arrived noon – feeling pretty miserable thanks …. Saw Major McKenzie, Lt. Speedy. Saw Johnston: Left same evening for Alexandria en route for France: only small party of 11ths remaining. Join 1st T. B. [Transportation Battalion]. Capt. Shaw O.C.

      Revert as from 19/4/16. Very hot. Improving in condition, though very weak.
      May 28
      Train to Alexandria, draft of 68.
      May 29
      Arrive Alexandria 6 a.m. Embark SS Manitou [HMT Manitou]. Mixed company Australian and N.Z. … Voyage good, ship not so good. Submarine scare: 1 death. any destroyers

      Arrived Marseilles. Train same evening. Fine trip through continuous gardens, splendid country for 53 hours. Arrived at Étaples early morning.
      June 9
      … Continue training in Bullring [common term for training ground]. Letters from Ovingdean. To Étaples and Paris – Plage several occasions. Met many old friends, miss many also. Major Mc. O.C. R Brigade.
      July 11
      Entrained 6 a.m. for Armentières, all available men in 1st. A.I.B. [Auckland Infantry Battalion]. Arrive Bailleul midday. Marched to Armentières billets. Aeroplane fight. Take up quarters in old convent Rear of wrecked cathedral. Join 15th. Coy. 1st. A. I. B. Brook of Hokianga S.M. [Sergeant Major]. Lt Speedy here.
      July 12
      Meet G. H. Black who is training for raid with party of 190.
      July 15
      Hear news of Otago raid. Party loses heavily. Poor Black missing. Later go up front line to rebuild wrecked parapets. Hear Black just brought in badly shot up. Appears that he charged a machine-gun with only revolver for arms. We are still training for our raid. Party reduced from 300 to 100. Am bayonet man travel trench bombing party [???]. Have been instructing in bayonet fighting and physical drill. Party very fit, but are getting tired of continual procrastination. Taylor and Simpson are in reserve covering party.
      July 19
      Raid fixed for tonight. Wrote T.W.H. [his father Thomas William Hughes] and Pips.
      Lts. Gasparich, Coburn, Cpl. [Corporal] Byers, 4 other privates and self get souvenirs before bombardment ceases. Return to dressing station. H. E. [high explosive] shell left forearm. Later meet Baigent in hospital near billets. Motor to Bailleul.
      July 20
      Train to 2nd General Australian Hospital at Boulogne.
      July 21
      X Ray.
      July 22
      Operation removal piece shell (H.E.) Sisters splendid.
      July 24
      By “S.S. Jan Breydell” to Dover. Train to London. Motor to Military Hospital Hammersmith.
