  • Thanks Poppa. Always remember that powerful smell of your pipe.
    My grandfather Clement Christie Brownie was wounded in the Battle of the Somme, but recovered to fight again at both Messines and Passchendaele. He kept a diary of his time in the war.
    Apparently he saw "that German bugger that shot me taking aim."
    Returned to NZ, married Gladys, had 3 children (one still with us today on 12 October 2017 - the hundred years' anniversary of the great NZ losses at Passchendaele) and now has 10 surviving grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He died while playing Golf in Wanganui in 1966.
    Wanted to re-enlist in 1939 but was considered too old. He never did have time for Germans.
