The following information appears in a Medical Report dated 24 December 1916 on Frederick Josland's Military Personnel File. The Report was made at No.1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, Hants. "During an advance [at the Somme on 2 October 1916] he was hit by a bullet. Entrance wound on inner side of arm at anterior azilla fold. Exit on posterior surface of arm at level of middle of arm. Bled very freely after injury and was unable to move arm or fingers. Operation at 1st Canadian Hospital about 4 days afterwards, when he says a main artery was tied. On admission (Nov. 24th) wounds were healing. Wounds are healing slowly. Entrance and exit wounds discharge a little as does the infra-clavicular wound made at operation. The left hand is livid and cold, he has no radial pulse, and nutrition at tips of all fingers is poor. Extension at elbow joint is very fair but flexion is poor (except when forearm is pronated). There is median and ulnar paralysis and apaeathesia with a tendency to over extension at the wrist. The muscles supplied by these nerves show R.D." Invalided to New Zealand per H. S. "Marama" on 13 January 1917. When a subsequent examination occurred at Christchurch Hospital on 11 April 1917 it was noted that there was very slight improvement with median and ulnar paralysis still present. AWMM
