  • "Will be remembered by many as one of the finest half-backs that ever represented the school. He enlisted immediately he was of age, going into camp April 3rd, 1916, and sailing from Wellington July 29th. Barely a month in England, he was hurried accross to France, where he only lived a week, being killed on November 16th by a howitzer shell that exploded prematurely from one of our own batteries. He was buried at the Cite bon Jean Cemetery, near Armentieres." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School]) AWMM

  • I was looking through the WCC Recycle Centre and came across a small picture of a soldier and his horse killed in action. On the back it says: Found in Thames at Reading. Framed by (Jack) E L Herbert at Wanganui College 1909. It also states that Jack was killed in action 1916 at Armetieres (hence I was able to find him here). If anyone in his family is interested in claiming this very special family treasure (no reward necessary), please contact me 027 8115717. I would love to give it back to his family. Lee

    Report
  • My mother, Honour King n Toohill, was Edward's first cousin. His family roots on both sides were embedded in Eketahuna. His mother, Mrs AH Herbert, born Elizabeth Toohill (known in the family as Aunt Lizzie) was the daughter of Daniel and Dorcas Toohill, both buried in the Eketahuna Cemetery. Her brother, William Toohill was the local Chemist, and her sister, Mrs J S Tripe, was the wife of the Dentist. Edward attended Wanganui Collegiate School, Selwyn House, 1909-1912, His untimely death in 1916 was deeply felt throughout the whole family and led to his mother re-doubling her efforts to contribute to the war effort in the wider community of both the Wairarapa and Wellington.
