    • Dec 1916 - Details have been received by Mrs. J. A. Eivers, of Whakatane, concerning the death of her son, Corporal C. S. des Barres in a letter from his officer, Captain McHugh, saying "He was killed at his post by the bursting of a German shell and died a noble death and peaceful. He was one of my company and I considered him one of my best men to rely upon. He did every duty given him faithfully and well, and was a painstaking and intelligent n.o. officer.
