  • My mother Elisabeth ( Libby) middle child of Tom and Edna,( eldest David, youngest Jane) spent a lot of time researching her father during the 1970's and 80's in an effort to learn more about him and the effect this war had on him. Tom had died while she was on her way back from overseas and this helped her to get over this. She did this all before digital archives, papers past or the internet was invented, writing letters, looking up microfilm in libraries and helping to interview other World War 1 veterans for the British War Historian Lyn Macdonald, This was as the 11th hour approached to find out their stories before that generation passed on. Mum was thrilled Tom's photo appeared on the bookcover 1914-18 VOICES AND IMAGES OF THE GREAT WAR. I lay a poppy for Mum who would love to know this archive existed and that the " rising generation" were adding to it.- Anne Ogilvie 7-12-2023
