James Hannerman was the eldest son of William and Agnes Bannerman. He was the husband of L.V. Bannerman, Bluff, New Zealand.

" We learn with sorrow at the death from wounds on December the 22nd of 2nd Lt. J.W.H. Bannerman, Second Otago, who has lately contributed several articles to this magazine. He was a young NZ journalist, who dabbled first in that profession in his school days at Otago High. Here he caused a mild sensation by producing the "Rag", a school magazine highly revolutionary tendencies. The Head demanded, on pain of expulsion, the return of every copy of this scurrilous production, as he thought it. Bannerman rounded them all up, but succeeded in keeping a copy by taking a different page from each of fifty or sixty copies. Later he served on several Otago papers. and lately was editor of the "Bluff Press".He was a keen sportsman, representing South in cricket and hockey." The Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F.
