While researching the Bannister family - who are distant cousins - I found that Stanley Masters Bannister had died of wounds suffered at Ypres in 1917. He enlisted in 1916 with his brother Alexander who survived the war although wounded. Alexander died of sickness ( possibly the Spanish flu ) in 1919. It must have been terrible news for their parents -to lose both sons in 2 years. Stanley was farming before he sailed as a reinforcement and was only 21 when he died. I dont know how NZ ( and Australia ) coped -losing the very best of their young men to the " mincing machine " of the Western front, I dont feel we have recovered yet.
Rest in peace Stanley and Alexander - you are still remembered.
