    • Two returned soldiers figured in thE appointment of two paid officials by the Otaki Maori Racing Club this week. Mr. Skipwith was re-appointed starter on his return from active service, whilst an experiment is to be tried in the appointment of a judge by handing over that responsible position to another returned soldier, Mr. G. Hori Karauti, who is probably the only native judge acting in the Dominion. The latter is reported to be the possessor of a remarkable eyesight which no doubt will prove of great advantage in close finishes. OBITUARY.
LIEUTENANT HORO KARAUTI. The death occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital this week of an esteemed Native of Levin district, who was a member of the original Maori Contingent in the Great War, Lieutentant Horo Karauti, of Ohau. He was born about 53 .vears ago, and in his prime was a very alert and intelligent member of his race. He saw active service to the end of the War, and his decorations included the Croix de Guerre. He was a well educated man, an ex-student of the Otaki Maori College. For some years, after his return to the Dominion, he acted as judge for the Otaki Maori Racing Club, a duty which he had eventually to relinquish owing to failing eyesight. His health was badly affected by his experiences at the Front, an about five ago he became a patient in the hospital. Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 25 March 2016 - Press, 27 February 1932
