    • 'A tragic affair occurred in the 2nd Battalion lines on March 3rd. Captain R.J. Hill M.C., and 2nd Lieut. D. McLean were fatally shot without apparent reason by a private of the Battalion Transport, who, presumably insane, subsequently shot himself. A funeral service was held in the Hondeghem Cemetery on the following day was attended by representatives of each company and of other branches of the Division.' (Byrnes -Official History of the Otago Regiment) AWMM
    • Captain Hill was the battalion quartermaster, and when his regiment was in battle, he was able to obtain extra men when necessary to make sure that the front was supplied with all needs. In early March 1918, the men were stood down for a short time, and so extra manpower could not be retained. Roland asked Lieut. McLean to tell the private Avon Roderique, that he would be returning to his old regiment, and that was why the private went berserk - he could not face returning to the front and blamed the two officers. So sad for all! Public - John - Other relative - 29 May 2017 - Family Papers, though the English family did not then know the true circumstances of his death. Official History of the Otago Regiment gives full detail, as does Captain Hill's New Zealand War record. We have a copy of the Chaplain's letter, and pictures of Captain Hill, the military funeral, his MC and citation and have visited the graves in Hondeghem.
