    • Citation for Military Medal (MM):

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 1st October 1918, near GREVECOURT after crossing the CANAL de L'ESCAUT he turned an enemy heavy machine-gun on to the retreating enemy, inflicting heavy casualties and at the same time saving his own ammunition which was very short. Later when the enemy counter-attacked he held his ground with one gun, knocked out an enemy light machine-gun and crew and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy infantry who were working forward. His initiative, gallantry and devotion to duty largely assisted in the holding of the position"
