  • Son of Ellen and Robert Franklin, of Bloomfield, Dannevirke, Hawkes Bay

He gave his home address on the 2nd enlistment as 17 Russell Square London. This was the address of the NZ Soldiers’ Club. Family are not sure how he got to Egypt before attesting the first time - they understand he left the family farm (Bloomfield, out of Dannevirke) as a younger man and had farmed, as well as trading in animal skins, in British East Africa, now Kenya, for about 10 years. However he had returned to NZ in early 1916 as he signed his Will in Dannevirke on 17 February 1916. It is understood he tried to enlist in NZ but was turned down on health grounds. He then travelled to Egypt.

Family recount. Apparently Samuel was a Mason. Anecdotally it is suggested he used the Masons in UK to get himself enlisted in the British Army. However all records show he was in the NZ Army.

Recorded by Archives New Zealand and CWGC as 37191. The number 10/9999M is likely that assigned in Egypt AWMM
