  • "On the night of October 1st 1918, during operations in the vicinity of Canal de L'Escaut while reconnoitring an alternative route of evacuation from the forward area heavy enemy shell fire was encountered and shelter had to be taken behind a bank. As it was necessary to push further forward Driver Carroll volunteered to take his car through to another road, which he did and the forward post was reached in safety. On the return journey a flare was dropped from an enemy aeroplane which swept the road with machine-gun fire. Driver Carroll picked up two wounded men on the road and returned safely to the Advanced Dressing Station. Driver Carroll displayed great courage and coolness and by his willingness to go forward much valuable information was obtained from the forward area." - Mc Donald, W. (2010). Honours and awards to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Great War, 1914-1918. AWMM
