  • Sidney Hodgson was my mother’s father. He was the son of James Charles and Katherine Hodgson, of New Brighton, Christchurch, New Zealand, and husband of Florence Hamilton Hodgson of 13 Ngaio Rd, Kelburn, Wellington. My mother who was his only child was four and a half months old when he sailed on HMNZT Ruapehu from Wellington on March 14 1917 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. His ship arrived in Plymouth 69 days later and six weeks later he left for the western front on July 6. Three months later he was killed in action at Passchendaele on October 4 1917 at the age of 26, just three weeks before my mother’s first birthday. His name is on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium N.Z. Apse, Panel 6. I plan to be there on July 30 2017 for the Passchendaele Centenary event.

  • Sidney was my father's brother. I was named after him. He died in October and I was born on 01/12/17. By all accounts, he was a very fine young man.
