  • Left NZ as Sgt but reverted in UK to Pte normal procedure had to re-earn rank in action at the front. 26.8.16 posted to 1st Battalion Auckland Regiment (Company unknown), 1st Infantry Brigade. 16.9.16 blown up by shell (Shell Shock) 30.9.16 Wounded (WIA) GSW (Gun Shot Wound) L Chest. This was the battle of the Somme and the NZ Divisional attack on Flers and the NZ Division that spent the longest time in action of any Division on the Somme with thousands of casualties.

Wound confirmed in medical at Codford 28.12.16 as Left Chest, series of NZ Medical facilities in UK before being returned to NZ (RTNZ) for Discharge as no longer fit for Active Service. I note he suffers Influenza on ship on way home.

Family advise they still have his pay book which was in his top pocket when wounded, it has a slice right through diagonally but not all the way and they understand this saved his life.

Attestation form (volunteer for war service) gives prior Military service with A Company Otago Regiment – this will be compulsory military training that commenced at age 18 years from 1911. (?1913) WWI joined the 13th NCO Training Intake before being posted to E Company 13th Reinforcements as a Sgt.

In later life Charlie was an Associate Professor at Otago University, he was the co discoverer of iodised salt to prevent goitre.
He was actually the one to discover this but a Prof. Hercus took most of the glory according to the family. (Source: N.Taylor from family recollection) AWMM
