MR JAMES CHARLES McLEAN, The death, occurred suddenly at Ngawha Springs, Kaikohe, at noon yesterday, of Mr James Charles McLean, at the age of 69 years. Mr McLean who had been farming at Kirikopuni since the war, was paying a visit to the springs. He was born in Scotland, and, at the age of 10 years, accompanied his parents to New Zealand and settled in Waipu. He received his education in Waipu and in his younger days was occupied in business enterprise and later as a bushman. On the outbreak of the War he joined up with the 13th reinforcements, serving in the Rifle Brigade. He went through both battles of the Somme and was severely wounded in the hand, being invalided home after three years service. After his return he took up his farm at Kirikopuni. Mr McLean did not marry and is survived by two brothers, Messrs Donald McLean and Duncan McLean, both of Waipu. The funeral will be held at the Waipu Cemetery tomorrow afternoon, and a service will be held at the Waipu Presbyterian Church prior to leaving for the cemetery. (NORTHERN ADVOCATE, 23 OCTOBER 1936)
