    RAILWAY FATALITY. PINNED UNDER BOILER. MAN DIES OF BURNS.
    A verdict of accidental death was returned by the coroner at Otahuhu yesterday at the resumed inquest concerning the death of William James Robson Mackwood, who died from injuries received in an accident on July 23 when a donkey engine overturned at Mahia, Manurewa. Mr. R. H. Mackay represented the relatives of deceased, and Mr. V. R. Meredith the Railway Department. Dr. C. C. Jenkins said Mackwood was extensively scalded by steam on the face and arms and chest. Thomas Sutton, the ganger in charge of the work at the time of the accident, said the engine was returning after having taken a load across the filling, when it left the line and fell over the bank. Witness did not know what had caused the accident. When he examined the rails later he found everything in order.
    The engine driver, Leonard Newberry, said Mackwood was pinned underneath the boiler and was burned by escaping steam and water. (AUCKLAND STAR, 5 SEPT 1930) Public - Sandra - Researcher - 22 June 2018 - Papers Past Online
