    • John McDonald was the son of John George and Annie McDonald, of Carterton, Wellington, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Frank was in the artillery - 9th Company 1st Battery of the Wellington Regiment. He left NZ on 26 June 1916 a sergeant arriving at Plymouth England 7 weeks later. He spent 5 weeks in England at the NZers training camp in Wiltshire that was colloquially called Sling. Something must have happened to him at Sling because shortly before he departed to France on 28 September 1916 he "reverted to the ranks"
as they say - he became a private again.
He stayed in France on the Western Front for the rest his life. The night he went missing along with his buddy Corporate Richards he was still a private. They had set up their gun in an isolated shell hole with no other soldiers nearby, on the 1st August 1917. The next morning when they hadn't returned to their unit, two search parties where sent out to find them. They found their gun in position and intact with all it's ammunition, but they could find no trace of either man or any of their equipment. They did find however that near the gun some very big shell holes had been made during the night !
Interestingly an Inquiry was conducted some months later ( 4th February 1918 ) into their disappearance and witnesses from the 2 search parties were called to give evidence. It is from this Inquiry, held somewhere on the Western Front, that my previous comments come. It is all in his military history file. John Frank McDonald, son of John George McDonald and Annie McDonald nee McKenzie, brother of Elizabeth Kate Arcus nee McDonald was born 25th March 1887 at Tupurupuru Station near Masterton. (Maori history of the warrior Tupurupuru, www.rangitaneeducation.com/tupurupuru-and-konini/ ) Two sisters were also born in the area before the family moved to the Booth property near Carterton where 3 more sisters were born.
Frank also worked for the Booth family (connected to the Brothworks meat processing company) as a shepherd until his enlistment in 1916. The Photo of him with his Sister Elizabeth and Mother Annie can probably be dated between the two dates on his military history sheet, March 1916 and June 1916. He was promoted between regiments from Corporal to Sergeant then demoted down to Private for reasons unknown.
Frank was involved in the push to force the German advance into a retreat. The third battle of Ypres started on the 30th of July and is associated with the area known as Flanders Fields. A turning point in the war this battle was also known as the Battle of Passchendaele. He was first reported missing on the 1st of August 1917. His death is recorded as Killed in action at La Basse-Ville, France, Thursday 2nd August 1917. This is just South of the French Belgium boarder, near where he is buried in the NZ Memorial Cemetery called Messines Ridge, Mesen, Belgium. • I can add a bit of extra information about Frank and his demise but before I do I see that his Enlistment Medical for the NZ Army on 17 July 1915 was done by a Masterton GP Dr Norman Pryor. Norman's son was Owen a surgeon at Masterton Hospital who operated on me as a child to take fencing staples out of my stomach, and his grandson Simon was a Masterton GP known to many in the family who tragically died aged 58 just a few years ago.
Two months after examining Frank, Dr Pryor left NZ as military doctor - first to Gallipoli (see link to wonderful picture of him and his kit taken there) then to the Western Front where he was awarded the military cross for treating wounded in the battle of the Somne.
