    Proceeded overseas to France, 26 September 1916; joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 12 October 1916.
    Found guilty, 14 May 1917, of being absent from 8 am parade, 13 May: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2.
    Attached to No 2 NZ Machine Gun Company, 12 May 1917; rejoined Bn from attachment, 19 June 1917.
    Detached to 2nd Brigade School, 20 November 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 6 December 1917.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 3 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 22 January 1918.
    Detached to 2nd Brigade School, 22 January 1918; rejoined Bn, 2 February 1918.
    Appointed Lance Corporal, 7 May 1918.
    Detached to Divisional L[ewis] G[un] School, 19 May 1918; rejoined Bn, 7 June 1918.

    Tried by District Court Martial, 21 June 1919, on charge of when on Active Service joining in a mutiny in Forces belonging to His Majesty's NZEF, in a mutiny by combining with other soldiers of the Otago Prov. Det. to resist and offer violence to their Superior Officer in the execution of their duty; Alternative charge: being present whilst mutinous soldiers of the O.P. Det. forcible [sic] entered the Sgts' Mess of No 2 Camp Sling and not use [sic] his utmost endeavours to assist his superior Officers to suppress said mutiny': awarded 6 months' imprisonment with hard labour, reduced to the ranks, and forfeited 29 days' pay.
    Sentence remitted as from 4 July 1919.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from London on board HMNZT 'Cordoba', 18 July 1919; discharged, 30 October 1919.
    War service: 3 years 236 days (of which 3 years 99 days were overseas)
    Medals: Croix de Guerre, British War Medal, Victory Medal AWMM
