  • GISBORNE HERALD 26 June 2019 - TWO of five Gisborne World War 1 soldiers in a photograph published by The Herald earlier this week have been identified.

    One of the men is Reginald McKay, who was identified by his daughter Delys Hollamby.

    The other, Frank Hooper, was identified by another relative, who preferred not to be named.

    All five of the soldiers in the photograph survived the war but Mr McKay died in 1943, aged 47, and is buried in Taruheru Cemetery.

    Mrs Hollamby said her father lived in Hexton and died soon after suffering a brain haemorrhage ‘‘out in the fields’’.

    She never knew her father but recognised him in the photograph.

    “That’s my dad,’’ she said when she saw The Herald article and picture. “What are they doing with a photo of my dad?”

    Mrs Hollamby said her father was born in the South Island and became a carpenter.
