    Proceeded overseas to France, 26 September 1916; attached to strength, NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 27 September 1916; joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 12 October 1916.
    Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 27 December 1916 (necrosis, lymph glands, right groin); discharged to unit, 7 January 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 7 January 1917.
    Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 4 February 1917; transferred to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, 9 February 1917 (inflammation of connective tissue, penis); rejoined Bn, 14 February 1917.
    Transferred to 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 8 March 1917.

  • My grandfather whom I never met. Served in Paschendeale, Mons and the Somme as a stretcher bearer. Was wounded when a sandbag fell on him from a plane and spent some time in hospital in France. On leave he played the cornet-- solo --and with a band at the Royal Albert Hall in London for the King. He always said that nobody was interested in those who served in Passchendaele and would not go to the RSA as he said they only honoured Gallipoli veterans. Became a well known and respected brass band conductor and orchestra conductor. Lived on Denniston , up on the mountain worked as a foreman carpenter for the Westport Coal Company. Did however suffer all his life from the war, they called it a war neurosis in those days. I love and respect the man he was before and after the war. At 11 years old he was the Australasian Cornet Champion in the Open Section, beating superb adult playe
