    • Son of William Houlker and Hannah Maria Houlker, of 18, Brougham St., Nelson.

      James Houlker enlisted as a Captain and left for Suez with the 3rd reinforcements of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. He served briefly at Gallipoli. He was wounded early in the campaign, was hospitalised and recovered. Soon after returning, he was wounded again. In early August he received a gunshot wound to the thigh. He was taken from Anzac Cove to the hospital ship Valdivia on August 7. He was very feeble and died the following day at 3:15pm. Houlker was buried at sea that evening, near Anzac Cove. AWMM
    • Old Boy of Nelson Boys College, Nelson City, New Zealand. James Houlker attended Nelson Boys College from 1893 to 1900. As well as attaining excellence academically James Houlker also performed well on the sports field - particularly in athletics, rowing and rugby. James Houlker was also active in the Nelson College Dramatic Society : www: nelsoncollege.school.net
      After his death at Gallipoli in 1915 - Nelson College founded, in 1916, in his honour the James Houlker Memorial Prize (1916) which is still offered to Nelson Boys College students today.
