  • Recalled, at age 93, his nickname "garcon" as he was so young looking and his work as a stretcher bearer in France. Lucky not to be injured he did succumb to trench fever and was evacuated. It was whilst in hospital recovering in England that he developed a lung infection which left him weakened for many years

    "The aging warriors": they're in their 90's, but still remember the slaughter [all residents of Ranfurly Veterans' Home and Hospital, Auckland] in the Sunday Star, includes portraits.
