  • Born in Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, Nugent Welch studied at Canterbury School of Art and Welllington Technical College becoming a professional artist from 1909. He enlisted with NZEF 1916 and served as a sniper with 2nd Battalion NZ Rifle Brigade in France. He was appointed Official War Artist with NZ Division with rank of Sergeant in May 1918 and during that year completed anumber of oils and a large number of watercolours. Returning to New Zealand after the war Welch became a leading Wellington landscape artist. AWMM
