    Granted temporary rank of Captain, 3 March 1917.
    Note on file, 25 March 1917: 'I have to advise that Lt JW Andrews was admitted to hospital suffering from the effects of coke fumes inhaled from brazier in dugout.'
    Admitted to Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 20 April 1917 (mumps).
    Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gas poisoning, slight); admitted to No 8 General Hospital, Rouen, 10 June 1917; transferred to England, and admitted to NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 13 June 1917; discharged on leave, 25 August 1917.
    Admitted to 31st NZ Stationary Hospital for observation, 22 September 1917; transferred to Convalescent Home, Brighton, 27 September 1917 (debility).
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board 'Remuera', 9 May 1918; discharged, 12 August 1918.
    Total war service: 2 years 187 days (of which 1 year 288 days was abroad) AWMM
