    • Francis Connolly enlisted in the First World War under the false name Jack Barclay as he was too young to enlist.
      Jack Barclay's Military Personnel record held at National Archives has been altered to reflect the fact he is really Francis Patrick Connolly and Francis made a declaration to explain why he enlisted under an assumed name. AWMM
    • Francis was the youngest child of Thomas Conelly/Connelly/Connolly and Rose Anne Connolly ne Scallen who were married in Thames in St Francis Church on 8 May 1886, both stating they were born in County Tyrone, Ireland.
      Francis had two older brothers and two older sisters -
      James Joseph born in 1888, Anna Elizabeth born in 1889, Thomas Henry born in 1891 and Mary Eva born in 1895. Public - Maureen Patricia - Other relative - 3 May 2017 - Department of Internal Affairs marriage certificate, family papers/family tree
    • Francis was wounded on two occasions in Etaples France - the first time in June 1917 and the second time in June 1918 - on both occasions he was evacuated to England. Public - Maureen - Other relative - 30 June 2017 - Military Personnel File
    • Francis' death at the Wairoa Public Hospital on 18 May 1939 was notified to the Army and recorded on his Military Personnel File. His grave in Wairoa is marked by a plaque identifying him as Rifleman Francis Patrick Connolly and his death record states he is the son of Thomas and Rosanna Connolly.
      However, Francis Patrick Connelly also died on 24 March 1978 in Middlemore Public Hospital, Otahuhu, the son of Thomas and Rose Anne Connelly, the husband of Mary McLaughlin.

  • Separating out Francis' identity and that of the false identity of Jack Barclay that he made up in order to enlist has been quite confusing. Please alter or add any information if you feel I have got it wrong. Francis was obviously keen to go off and fight for his country with his comrades. He served his country and who knows what horrors he saw as a young man. He was wounded in action twice and both times he was evacuated to England, so they must have been serious injuries. Francis was one of the young men who returned home and made a place for himself surrounded by his family. We are proud of Francis, we will always remember him and he will always have a place of pride in the family.
