  • "Volunteered for active service in December, 1916, entering Trentham camp on January 6th. He left Wellington with the 24th Reinforcements during the following April, and owing to delay was compelled to put in another fortnight of camp life on the voyage home. He arrived late in England after a protracted journey, and while at Sling Camp went through some strenuous work. He remained there six weeks only before leaving for France, where he joined the 1st Battalion N.Z. Rifle Brigade, and was in the firing line with a Lewis gun team a few hours after. While on gas guard at headquarters he was killed instantaneously by a bursting shell on December 20th, 1917, near Polygon Wood. He left School in 1915."
