    • Son of Jeffery Ashwell, of 4, Half Acres, Bishop's Stortford, Herts.
      Buried in Barastre Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave 6.
      His younger brother, Second Lieutenant Alfred Ashwell also fell. He was serving with 1st Battalion, attached 10th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in action 4th April 1917. Buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France. Plot VI. Row F. Grave 14.
      They were sons of Jeffery Ashwell, of 4, Half Acres, Bishop's Stortford, Herts.
      The brothers are remembered on the Bishop''s Stortford War Memorial.
      The memorial is dedicated to the men who fell in both World War 1 and World War 2 and is in the form of a square obelisk and is located in the Town Park, Bishops Stortford, just off the A1250 where it crosses the River Stort. There are 208 names for World War 1 and 106 for World War 2. A lot of this information has come from the local newspaper, Herts and Essex Observer in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section and the names have then been tied with the Commonwealth War Graves Commisison, Soldiers Died in the Great War CD and Army Roll of Honour - World War II CD entries.
