  • Allan Satchell is my great-great grandfather through his daughter Joyce, her daughter Christine and my mother Natalie. I think about him more and more as I create art at Elam school of fine arts (UOA) talking about my whakapapa and where I came from. I am glad that I know about who he was and a little about how he lived his life because it makes me stronger. It is important to know about your past as it tells you where you are going. I feel like my tipuna is with me when I am making art, thinking about him and living in the house that he built. I think he would be proud that we have kept his beautiful house in the family and pleased to know that we think about him still.

  • Allan was the love of my grandmothers (Eddie) life, though we never met him, and she didn't speak of him often we were well aware of this, and his name was always mentioned in hushed tones. The picture of him always hung on her bedroom wall and no wonder she fell in love with him, what a handsome man. As the years go by and we learn more and more about World War One, the more grateful we are that he and his mates were prepared to leave our beautiful country and fight for our right to live in peace. We have been to the museum to view the photos that our Mum (Joyce) donated for safe keeping, the staff are always so helpful to provide this service which is much appreciated. Allan, your name lived on with our late brother, Allan John, and now has been passed on to his grandchild Cameron Allan, long May this tradition continue! Christine

  • I am Allan's twin granddaughter. Sadly Granddad died before I was born so never had the opportunity to meet him. On ANZAC Day 2015 my daughter Janis and granddaughter Taryn laid some flowers and a small white cross on granddad's grave to say thank you. He is buried in Hillsborough Cemetery along with his father William Satchell and his mother Susan Satchell (nee Bryers). Allan had three children, Shirley, Owen and Joyce (my mother). RIP

  • I am Allan's great-granddaughter and would have loved to have met him, but he died quite young in 1944. The family story states that he was never the same after the war and was in fragile health which may have contributed to his early death. We are so thankful to Allan for many things, that he was willing to go to war to secure our future is just one. My family are lucky enough to live in the house that he built on Park Ave. We think about him all the time and have photo's of him up around our house. His widow was my Great-Grandmother who lived until 1997 but never remarried. Allan was an artist and a photographer who brought back an album full of photo's that he took while he was in Egypt and Palestine. These have been donated to the Museum. I still have a book of the drawings that he did while he was away and his medals. Thank-you Allan.
