  • Obituary
    • Colourful Waipu citizen dies. Waipu recently lost one of its more colourful citizens when Mr Hector Norman Sutherland died at the age of 87. Once called the fastest telegraphist in the New Zealand Post Office, Mr Sutherland was a telegraph operator for the occupation forces in Germany after WW1. He served in the signals corp. He worked as a bushman between the wars, following a period with his father in the bush at Te Kuiti, where he was born, and later at Kaihu. Mr Sutherland was married in 1928 and has two children. For many years Mr Sutherland was secretary of the Caledonian Society at Waipu. An accomplished musician – he taught himself to read music – Mr Sutherland played second violin in an early Waipu Orchestra. (Northern Advocate, Dec 1974) Public - Sandra - Researcher - 23 November 2018 - Waipu Museum
