  • Last attached to the Welington Infantry Regiment as an instructor at Sling Camp, Bulford, Wiltshire, England.

    Name of next of kin name is spelt incorrectly on the official Nominal Roll as Mrs G.C. West. Correct name is Mrs E.C. West.

    Also awarded the Ashanti Medal and the East and West Africa Medal (1887-1900) with Gambia Bar (1894).

    After serving with the Royal Marines, he worked for British Railways from 1899-1909 at Southampton. He trained his Border Collie 'Jack' to collect coins for an orphanage, raising a total of almost 600 pounds. His family settled in South Taranaki in 1910. Military training was at Trentham Camp. He returned to New Zealand on the 'Athenic' May 1918. Family source. AWMM
