For marked gallantry and good work east of Le Quesnoy on the 4th November, 1918. Early in the attack, when his platoon officer became a casualty, he took over command of the platoon and led them admirably. His platoon inflicted many casualties on the enemy and captured about 200 prisoners and ten machine-guns. Throughout the attack he displayed fine courage and leadership. • I brought a few diaries from an Antique Dealer a couple of years ago. They belonged to his wife and gave a simple life of a farmer from the 30s to the 50s. This is how I discovered Sydney Board through the writings of his wife.
