    Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 2 December 1916.
    Wounded in action, 7 July 1917 (gun shot wound, back, right hand); admitted to No 4 NZ Field Ambulance, 8 July 1917, and transferred same day to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 9 July 1917; to England, 16 July 1917, and admitted same day to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 6 December 1917; marched in to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 7 February 1918; marched in to Sling Camp, 9 April 1918.
    Appointed Lance Corporal, 22 May 1918; Temporary Corporal, 23 May 1918.
    Detached for Course of Instruction, Gas School, Chiseldon, 3 June 1918; returned from Gas School, 12 June 1918.
    Promoted Corporal, 26 November 1918.
