  • The death occurred at Te Puia Hospital on Thursday night, of Daniel John Geary, aged 52yrs. He was born in Dunedin, was a son of the late Mr. A. A. Geary. As a young man he was a wagondriver for an aerated water manufacturer in Dunedin. On the out break of the Great War he enlisted in the southern city & left NZ with the l0th reinforcements. He served in France until the Armistice, receiving wounds in the Battle of Passchendale. On returning to NZ he came to this district & settled at Tokomaru Bay, where he was employed for some years by his brother-in-law, Mr. Harry Airey, then proprietor of the Te Puka Hotel. Later he worked at the Tokomaru Bay freezing works. For a number of years he had been in ill-health, & about 6 months ago was overtaken by a serious illness, from which he failed to recover.
