  • My father was in the NZ Machine Corps WW1. His name was Maurice Leo Bartlett Army No 44889. He went into front line action in October 1917 and survived until the War's end in November 1918. He sustained shell fragment wounds to one leg and was affected for the rest of his life by the number of gas attacks he underwent. He died in 1982. The reason for my contribution was that as a child growing up in Richmond, Nelson. I remember quite distinctly Ted Lukey calling on my Dad on a number of occasions over the years. He from memory drove himself to our place even though he was on crutches and had only one leg. To be honest I do not know how Dad and Ted came to be connected but I do remember him and concur on the sacrifices they both made during and after the horrific conflict of 1914 to 1918 .
