    suffered gassing in 1917. Auckland Star, Volume XLVIII, Issue 200, 22 August 1917, Page 6. PRIVATE H. P. COLLINS. Mr John Collins, of Takapuna, has received private advice from the Defence Minister that his son, Private Herbert Percy Collins, has been gassed, and is now in Brockenhurst Hospital.   • On enlisting Herb entered the under19 boxing competion, he won . these were fit young men from around the whole of nz , however Herb was an athlete a boxer taught by his Father and a fearsome swimmer, he was well known in Takapuna not just as a great guy but also for swimming from Takapuna beach over to Rangitoto Island then back again on a regular basis, thats what i call swimming.
