On enlisting Herb entered the under19 boxing competion, he won . these were fit young men from around the whole of nz , however Herb was an athlete a boxer taught by his Father and a fearsome swimmer, he was well known in Takapuna not just as a great guy but also for swimming from Takapuna beach over to Rangitoto Island then back again on a regular basis, thats what i call swimming.
