  • My partner and I visited Alban's grave in 2013. We were generously assisted in this by the local French residents. It was a sobering experience as we conjured, as we could, the realities of his sacrifice and the contrast with his present resting place in the now quiet, peaceful countryside. He was my great uncle, brother to my grandmother who even in her final years was always brought to tears when she recalled him and the sacrifice he made. Alban died within a week of his brother who is buried approximately 10 kilometres away from him. After our private tribute to Alban we left a small piece of paua at his graveside so that he would have with him forever a piece of his homeland.

  • So Many times I think of you and feel the pain the family must have felt on hearing of your death so far away. So brave returning twice to the feilds of war . Never forgotten. I will be at Auckland Grammer to honour your memory there.
