  • My partner and I visited Ernest's grave in 2013. We were very generously assisted in this by the local French villagers. It was a sobering experience as we conjured as best we could the realities of his sacrifice and the contrast between that and his final resting place in the beautiful peaceful French countryside. Ernest was my great uncle, being my grandmother's brother. She lived to 101 years of age and even in her final years was always brought to tears when she recalled her brother and the ultimate sacrifice he made. Ernest died within a week of his brother Alban who is buried approximately 10 kilometres away from him. After giving our private tribute at his graveside we left with Ernest a small piece of paua so that he would forever have a piece of his homeland with him.

  • I leave this note to say that even 100 years on your sacrifice still is raw in the hearts of those that share your family ties. I wish we could have known you I wish my Grandad could have grown older with an older brother. I will be at Auckland Grammer School to honour your memory
