He went to Ploegsteert wood sector on the front in Belgium . April 1917 in rest camps

No 5. Divisional Company NZ Machine gun corps 25th June 1917 During this time he was in the battle of Messines, and La Basseville,

After La Basseville Frederic was involved in the Passchendaele battle near what is today Leper Messines . After that he was deployed in the nearby Polygon Wood Sector. .
After these Battles Frederic was in various rest camps . He was with the machine gun corps for about a year .
From 17th June 1918 he was in the New Zealand Entrenching Battalion . Just after this Frederic was in hospital for 6 weeks at Etaples in France with a period at Camiers. He went back to Codford England on leave 22nd July 1918 to 6th August 1918 . When he went back to the Western front again he joined (Divisional) Employment company
Frederic took part with the Divisional company in the advance between august and November 1918 that culminated in the capture of Le Quesnoy just before the Armistice..
By 22nd December 1918 Frederic was back in England posted to 3rd reserve battalion of the Canterbury Regiment at Sling camp. by 31st Jan 1919he was in hospital with influenza as on his casualty form .Discharged 11th March 1919 and took up a camp job . Whether he was empoyed as a hairdresser since that was his trade ...will we ever know?
By 31st Mrch he was back in hospital again . He had previously been in and out of field ambulances and hospitals and rest camps with condylomata and this last admittance to hospital for influenza may have been a final treatment or check . Frederic was not wounded in action at anytime while on the battlefields.. Frederic after he was discharged from hospital for good on 15th July 1919 his records say WPD which either means wounded, (sick) person or war pension Dept. In fact he was sent to Sling Camp.
While here he took up smoking as never smoked in his life . All the soldiers had a packet of cigarettes handed out to them and when my father opened his there was a note tucked inside . he read it and it said.
IF YOU ARE SINGLE DROP A LINE. IF YOU ARE MARRIED NEVER MIND.
AWL on 26th July 1919 my Father went off to Ireland and looked this girl up . When he got back to sling camp on 1st August 1919 he was reprimanded and docked 6 days pay.
He must of liked this girl as he married her while on AWL . She went o NZ to join him the following year but the marriage did not last and twenty years later he married my mother who was born in 1917.
There was a big riot at the time Frederic was at sling camp as the soldiers wanted to go home now the war had finished and they had no idea when they were going home . It was when they dug this gigantic kiwi out of chalk on the hill side . I suppose they wanted something to do . The Kiwi Nugget Company maintained it for years but think it has now fallen into a sate of disrepair . The state of the health and fitness of each man was checked out in various grades with A being the highest and was the first to be sent home . I think it to was mainly due to the shortage of available shipping ,
Frederic was sent home on 5th August 1919 on ths SS Ayrshire and disembarked at Lyttelton . He was finalized discharged from Service on 23rd October 1919.

When WW2 started my father wanted to join again but he was married with two children at the time and a lot older so turned down , so he enlisted in the New Zealand Home Guards No. 305836
Wellington DESC NZ 5th JUne 1942 . Transferred to Manawatu Palmerston North 3rd December 1942 back to area 5 DESC 5 Pool Area Wellington 1st January 1944 to 6th April 1944. . the end of the war.

He is buried in the RSA section of the Matamata cemetery . Our Mother was interned in the same plot 23rd Feb 2012 aged 95 years. Public - margaret - Child - 4 June 2015 - family papers
