  • Royden Jackson was the son of Mrs. M. E. Jackson, of 21, St. George's Bay Rd., Parnell, Auckland.

The following information is from Army News, 3 August 2004, issue 314. "Once in England he began training with the 1st Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade(NZRB) at Sling Camp. He left for France on 6 August 1917 and marched into camp at Etaples. He then joined C Company of the 1st Battalion in the field and had his first experience of trench warfare.

Roy Jackson was killed in action during the first hours of fighting on 12 October 1917." Clipping provided by the son of Mrs. M. E. Jackson.

New Zealand lost 18,166 service men and women, out of a population of approximately 1,089,825, in World War I. Nearly all those killed were buried overseas - 5325 New Zealanders have no known grave. The WWI Battle of Passchendaele was New Zealand's worst military disaster, in a few short hours on a wet and cold October morning in 1917, over 1000 kiwi soldiers were killed and a further 2000 wounded in an attack on the German line.
