  • Son of Sydney Henry and Helen Carrington James, of Stratford.

"From his School days a military enthusiast, left New Zealand as a lieutenant in the Wellington Mounted Rifles, October, 1914, receiving his promotion in June, 1915. The troop he commanded was largely composed of Stratford men, by whom he was greatly loved. He was badly wounded in the leg on Chunuk Bair, but would not give in until compelled to do so. He died, apparently from exhaustion, on the hospital ship 'Gascon.'" (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School]) AWMM
