    • The family are in possession of a descriptive letter Con wrote from the trenches, dated June 10-17, 1917, in the days after the Battle of Messines, Belgium, June 1917
      'all of a sudden the earth began to tremble violently. This continued for perhaps half a minute, when there was a terrific roar as though all the guns in the world had fired at the same time. The whole of the top of the hill or ridge which Fritz had his trenches on went flying hundreds of feet in the earth as a sheet of flame.... Public - Maree - Direct descendant - 3 April 2023 - and sparks. There must have been hundreds of Germans hurled into eternity at the same time. He was changing over at the time so had twice as many men in the line as he usually does. The mine had hardly finished exploding when all our guns for miles back opened fire at the same time. From machine guns up to the big naval guns were hurling death into the Hun lines, and it seemed impossible that anything could live in such an inferno.   • continuing Con's letter to family, June 1917: 'The bombardment had been going on for a fair time when we got the order to advance. For awhile the Hun seemed too stunned to reply seriously, but soon his big guns at the back directed their fire on to us. Twenty minutes after our first wave went over, German prisoners were coming back to our line.
    They put up no fight at all for a start. As I was not in the first waves I had no hand to hand fighting to do, although the first lot over are the best off, as Fritz sends all his big stuff back to keep reserves from coming up. The artillery knows where these are but do not know where the first lot are. As we went forward we passed over corpses, mangled and torn, while others were in their death struggles crying for water, which no one had time to stop and give them.
