  • I am the second son of Joe Robb's elder daughter. Our grandfather served with the NZ Army Engineers. He was gassed while serving in the trenches in Belgium. I remember him mentioning Flanders which I understood to be the nearest location he was serving when gassed. He would tell us of the brave soldiers who crept across open ground at night to lob grenades into the German trenches. Some would create a distraction to draw German fire while others crept over and laid booby traps inside old biscuit tins. He was lucky to be evacuated to England and spent weeks recovering from mustard gas poisoning.

  • I am the oldest son of Joe's oldest daughter, Nolene. I met him several times before he died. He was a commanding character, tall thin, weathered and a little stooped. He made a big impression on me. He held strong opinions about most things. He did not speak much about the war but did share some stories after I must have pestered him on many occasions. He was in the infantry and served on the front line in France after 1916. I am unsure what battles he was involved in. He told me about how soldiers were warned against smoking in the trenches as the Germans would shoot at the glowing cigarettes of matches. He said the best sound was the crack of a rifle shot as you always knew that one had missed you. He was gassed and after recuperating, spent the remainder of the war driving locomotives to the front line. He became National President of the Steam Engine Drivers Union. Good bloke

  • JOSEPH ROBB, IS MY MATERNAL GRANDFATHER. I NEVER MET HIM, I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO. I THINK HE FOUGHT IN FRANCE AND I KNOW HE WAS INJURED BY THE GAS. MY MOTHER NEVER LIKED TO TALK ABOUT IT, SO I DON'T HAVE MUCH INFORMATION, JUST A PHOTOGRAPH OF HIM IN UNIFORM, LOOKING VERY SMART AND VERY YOUNG .... "LEST WE FORGET." GEMMA SELBY.
