    • Son of Samuel and Ellen Jickell, of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England.

      Left New Zealand with the Main Body as Regimental Sergeant Major.

      Gained commission as Second Lieutenant on 29 July 1916 (Studholme 1928).

      Embarked for a second time as ship's Quartermaster on 2 January 1917 aboard the SS 'Opawa' with the 20th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. Arrived at London, England, on 27 March 1917.

      Appointed to rank of Lieutenant in the Field on 5 October 1917 (Studholme 1928).

      The Auckland Museum Library's manuscripts collection contains a letter (MS 2005/18, item 2) outlining the circumstances of Jickell's death. AWMM

    • Lieutenant Jickell's father - Samuel Jickell (born England 1856; died Palmerston North 1939)
      emigrated from England to New Zealand to undertake Engineering employment at Auckland - and later Nelson. Samuel Jickell was the City Engineer at Nelson - and designed and was responsible for the engineering work in the construction of Rocks Road (the road from Port Nelson to Tahunanui).
