Citation for Military Cross (MC): "Messines Offensive 7th to 9th June 1917. During the attack on Messines this Officer as Regimental Medical Officer, did excellent work. As soon as the objective of the Battalion had been gained he moved his R.A.P. right up to our line and was able to deal with the wounded very quickly and got them off to the A.D.S. Capt Johns has been with this Battalion since December 1915; he was with us at the evacuation of Gallipoli, and through the Somme. I cannot too highly praise his attention to the general health of the men and the devotion to duty at all times." (London Gazette, 1 January 1918, p. 53, Rec. No. 990) AWMM

  • Son of Mr F.J. Johns, of Wanganui.

Husband of Mary J. Johns, of 6 Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, Scotland.

    Gained Captain's commission on 1 October 1915 (Studholme 1928).

"Was here from 1902-1906. In 1907 he attended Victoria College, and a year later started for Edinburgh, obtaining his medical degree in 1913. While there he was attached to the Artillery Battery of the O.T.C., and after a brief visit to Canada returned home to join the N.Z.M.C., leaving for the second time in 1915. After a short stay in Egypt he was sent over to Gallipoli, where he was among the last 150 to leave. He later proceeded to France, acting as M.O. to the 1st Canterbury Battalion, being finally transferred to the 3rd Field Ambulance, where he attained his majority in 1918. While in charge of a dressing station, and watching certain stretcher cases being brought in on August 25th, 1918, he was killed instantly by shell fire." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])
