    Having qualified at School of Instruction, rank of Lance Corporal made substantive, 21 December 1916.
    Proceeded from Sling to France, 7 January 1917; marched in to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 9 January 1917.
    Admitted to 18th General Hospital, Camiers, 17 January 1917 (mumps: slight).
    Joined 2nd Bn, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, posted to B Company, and reverted to ranks at own request, 3 March 1917.
    On leave, 12 July 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 20 July 1917.
    Admitted to 33rd Field Ambulance, 4 September 1917, and transferred same day to 41st Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 8 September 1917; discharged to No 6 Command Depot, 14 September 1917; to No 5 Command Depot, 8 October 1917; rejoined unit, 17 January 1918.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 23 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 12 March 1918.
    Wounded in action, 26 March 1918 (gun shot wound, right leg: severe), and admitted same day to 12th Stationary Hospital; transferred to No 2 Australian General Hospital, 28 March 1918; to England, 30 March 1918, and admitted to King George Hospital, London; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 24 April 1918. Classified by Medical Board as unfit for military service, 11 July 1918.
    Transferred to Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 25 July 1918.
    Commenced return to New Zealand on board HT 'Ulimaroa', 20 December 1918; discharged (physically unfit for war service on account of wounds received in action), 23 July 1919.
