"I am dropping you a few lines to let you know my whereabouts. I hope you didn't get anyways worried when you got word that I had been wounded. It was nothing serious as it wasn't a very big piece that hit me and missed the bone. It went in a few inches above the elbow, and came out a bit lower down. It happened on the 12th of October at Passchendaele Ridge near Ypres and that night I went down through the dressing stations and was sent on board the Red Cross Train to a hospital at Boulogne. I stopped there for about a week and was then sent across to England where I now am. The rain and mud in Flanders was something terrible. The whole place was like a huge swamp. It took me about six hours to get to the first dressing station and talk about tired and weary after no sleep and little food for three days and two nights. Some of the wounded must have had a very bad time - I mean those who had to be carried out as Fritz used to shoot the stretcher - bearers without the slightest hesistation. In front of where I was there were three of his men running about on the top of the ridge waving a Red Cross flag but if we showed ourselves in the slightest bit it was the signal for a shower of bullets from his snipers and machine gunners. I think we must have had pretty heavy losses, but I expect you will see the casualty lists. I know a lot of my mates were killed and wounded". AWMM
