  • I was the eldest of four daughters, I have many happy memories of my father he was a real character and loved teasing people. He was a hard working man. We were a very happy family and loved doing things together. He was very loving and I was always proud to be his daughter. Sports were a big part of his life, tennis, bowls and golf.
    Public - Muriel Ruth - Child - 31 March 2017
    Report
  • I loved going to stay at Avalon with my Uncle Joe and Aunt Clar. Uncle used to allow us to help him on the farm. I can remember,as a child, asking him how he lost his arm. He replied "the Germans wanted it to make sausages!!" Such was his sense of humour. There were few things he was unable to do but he couldn't tie his tie or eat an egg from an egg cup. I remember the thrill my husband and I got when we found the letter written to his brother Ted in a rusty tin in a shed on the farm in Opotiki. We couldn't believe he had written it with his left hand.

  • Joe was a wonderful man, he lost an arm in the war, but it never deterred him, I can remember him playing golf, hit the ball straight as a dye, could hold is own on the course easily. When it came to shooting he could bowl a Rabbit with the wink of an eye, then work the bolt with the gun between his legs for the next shot. He farmed all thru his life and there wasn't much he couldn't do, including shear a sheep, took a little longer but he could do it!
